User Guide Overview Scan Scan Tips Assemble Title Page Editor Viewer
Scan allows you to quickly scan a document and immediately view it, at which point you may save it to your hard disk, print it or email it. There are many times when you have a document that has to be shared with someone else, like a letter, a receipt, a notice or a document someone gave you. You don't need to keep this document but you need to get it to someone fast. You could fax it or you could scan it and provide it in a more usable digital format. Scan makes this task very easy and convenient.
Other times you may have a group of documents that you would like to have in one secure electronic document, such as a .PDF file or the newest .XPS file for Microsoft Vista (works on Windows XP as well). In this case you need a scanner with an automatic document feeder (ADF). Scan your group of documents and they come out in the format you select.
To start choose Scan from the left menu. To learn more about scanning read 'Scan Tips' in this Guide.
If this is the first time for using your scanner since starting the application then you will be prompted to choose a scanner. Always choose the scanner device driver that has 'WIA' in its name, as shown in the following image. For all other scans during your work session the selected driver is used by default and the selection window does not appear.
If you want to scan a document and your scanner device driver does not appear in the selection window you may have it turned off or may have turned it off while your computer was running. When and if this happens then it is recommended to shut down your application, turn on your scanner, then restart. Also, when you start a scan the scanner may sometimes appear to be doing nothing. If the lamp in the scanner has been off for awhile it takes time to warm up before it will work.
When you start a scan activity the program finds the device driver you select and loads the information from the device to get ready to scan your document. Therefore, before you start Scan put your document in your scanner first so that the program will auto select the correct scan option you desire. If you have a scanner with an ADF (automatic document feeder) and want to scan using the feeder then you will get the Scan Options window showing the Document Feeder selected. If you wish to use the flatbed option or do not have an ADF and therefore only have a flatbed option, you will get a different Scan Option window for this feature.
The picture below shows the options available when you use the ADF to scan your documents. Note that the Document Feeder is selected for your paper source and the page size selector is activated.
The picture below shows the options available when you use the Flatbed to scan your documents. Note that Flatbed is selected for your paper source, the page size selector is disabled, and there is a preview window to show your scan result for preview scans.
The Preview scan offers some extra options for scanning small documents. In Preview mode the scanner will make the scan and show the image in the preview area and outline it. You may take your cursor and move any of the four border outlines to better choose what area you want in your final scan. When you complete your editing click the Scan button to get the final scan.
